23rd Feb 2018,
A new project for The Shades - an open mike set. Vocalist Coral has chosen Venus in Furs, for one of the songs. Well I had a listen to this tune and by chance strummed my Indian Sitar and the sitar seemed to match the key of the song perfectly, which is C sharp. If you play sitar you will know C sharp is a very normal tuning for the instrument. The band has decided to have a go at it, I might even try my Baldwin Electric Harpsichord in the mix. Watch The Shades web page for more details. The Shades
1st Feb 2019, Indian slide guitar
After 4 years of owning a Mohan Veena (Indian Slide Guitar) I have started to explore how to play it. Finding out how to tune it was a problem, originally the manufacturer said to do your own thing!
12th January, 4 hours at Farm studio
The Shades become 5 again with a new lady singer. This has added new songs to the repertoire including fingerstyle classics such as Landslide, Fleetwood Mac, True colours Cyndi Lauper etc. The best bit is songs by Janis Joplin including, Move Over. This should give the band something funky to play. We are also trying out Ordinary World, Duran Duran, as an instrumental.
19th January evening The Shades will play a 40 min set at The George Pub. Gary will sing Wild Wood, Paul Weller as part of the show. The band will also play an instrumental version of Queen, We are the champions
2nd January 2019
The Shades are getting ready for their next gig, The George Pub, 8 High Street, Hoddesdon, EN11 8BL. Looks like a good venue with good stage and PA.

29th November 2017. Look what's coming from India! An antique Rudra Veena. I have a contact who travels to India regularly and is going to inspect this instrument for me before shipment to UK. More photos to follow. If anyone is interested in shipping from India, I will be posting more info on how to do this safely
20th November 2017. This blog is about my general musical interests and what I come across on my travels. You will find guitars, unusual and antique keyboards and I have a big interest in World Music; in particular Indian classical.
Surbahar (or bass sitar) Purchased from Hobgoblin Music, London, June 2016. Unrestored. This instrument has now been put into playing order. There has never been a makers name, so I have no idea who made it.
20th november 2017. I was very tempted by this small Electric Surbahar on my recent trip to the north of England. About the same size as an electric guitar, a very practical instrument. Did not buy it but I think I will look out for an electric sitar.
20th November 2017. Everybody starts out with a Morley Clavichord. This c1975 instrument has done 20 years service with us
20th November 2017 This fully working Push Up Player c1902 has now been sold. I will post a video soon
20th November 2017 This is my hand painted c1980's Dobro Resonator guitar. The woodwork was a bit plain so I commissioned A Trinidad Sunset on the back.

Pete Turner Resonator Guitar
Terry is having a handmade guitar built by Kent guitar maker Pete Turner.
I spent several hours at Timberland, Tonbridge, Kent selecting wood for the guitar. Finally settled on Koa wood for the body and ebony for the fingerboard.
Photos show the wood chosen, machine for bending wood to guitar shape, back of the guitar and work in progress on workbench.
More details to follow once there is more progress to report.
